It is encouraging to note that more than one million tourists came for meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE), out of the total 20.9 millions tourists who visited Malaysia in 2007. Even though it is an improvement of 23.5% compared to 2006, the figure however represents only 5% of total tourist arrivals here. This indicates that the local industry has great potential to grow.

We endeavour to build on Malaysia’s status as a popular tourist destination to attract more MICE visitors. The country offers a plethora of sights and sounds beyond business. The natural beauty, complemented by our world-class hospitality, advanced infrastructure and comfortable transportation system, makes Malaysia an alluring package for MICE. In the current economic slowdown and cost-conscious business climate, Malaysia also offers a value-for-money proposition.

The Ministry will continue to implement major campaigns such as Meet & Experience to promote MICE in a large scale. The Government is constantly upgrading and expanding the country’s infrastructure to meet the fast growing figures of MICE arrivals. On the administrative front, the recent establishment of Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) is a major step in the right direction.

To support its rapid progress, the industry requires a publication that caters to its specific needs. This is where Meeting Planner 2009 comes in as a welcome addition to the industry’s library of reference materials. I would like to congratulate and thank the publisher, Tourism Publications Corporation Sdn Bhd, for supporting the informational needs of the industry.
